Maybe if we had had more than 20 people in the entire State Department who spoke Arabic and understood the Arab culture we would have realized the folly of trying to impose an American style democracy on a culture hundreds, if not thousands, of years older than our country. The arrogance and cowboy swagger of the current administration has destroyed any vestige of American influence that does not originate from the barrel on an M16. Furthermore, I think it's time for the media to substitute the word "religous" in place of "sectarian" whenever they talk of the escalating violence in Baghdad. These aren't Democrates and Republicans torturing and killing each other. They are passionate "believers" whose adherence to ancient myths is deadly to human life and civilization in the 21st century. The only way out of this morass is to try to improve life on earth so that a leap to the netherworld doesn't seem to be such an attractive alternative
